Read further to learn interesting facts and dates in Alleghany County History. Why is Alleghany County NC called the "Unspoiled Province," you ask? Its origins date back to a time when the county's rural lands were so isolated and remote that travel to and from the county was rare. Many called the area the "Lost Province" to describe the way in which adjacent areas in the Western North Carolina Mountains such as Wilkes County, Ashe County NC and Watauga County NC thrived and grew during the booming years just before the Great Depression, yet Alleghany County NC remained economically much like it was during the height of settlement here. After great success in capitalizing on the gorgeous Mountain Property in North Carolina available here, places like Sparta NC, Roaring Gap North Carolina, and areas along the NC Blue Ridge Parkway and New River NC have somehow kept their small town charm, while growing commercially and economically into what most now call the "Unspoiled Province." Early SettlersLong before Alleghany County became known for its abundant outdoor recreation, lovely Blue Ridge Mountain Real Estate and one-of-a-kind mountain culture, it was settled in the 1700s by English, German, Scottish and Irish settlers; some settlers may have even come via the "Wagon Road" that connected the Carolinas to places up north in Pennsylvania. It is believed that the word, "Alleghany" means "fine stream" in the native Indian language that was spoken throughout by the indigenous groups that lived here. It was not until 1858-59 in Alleghany County History that the settlers in the county decided to secede from being included as part of northeastern Ashe County NC and form their very own county. After the county lines were decided upon, it was not until 1868, some ten years later, that the State of North Carolina formally recognized and counted Alleghany County as its own. This was due to quarrelling over land lines and the Civil War. Throughout
