Ashe County Christmas Trees

West Jefferson NC-- It’s not quite Thanksgiving, but Ashe County Christmas tree growers are already gearing up for the yuletide industry. The NC choose and cut season begins on Saturday, Nov. 18 at a number of area farms.

The tradition has evolved to include more than just choosing and cutting a tree for the holidays and many offer a mountain experience for the entire family including hay rides, pony rides, mountain crafts and hot cider. Wreaths and roping are also available for selection.

North Carolina is ranked second in the nation in Christmas tree production and an estimated 50 million Fraser fir trees are grown on more than 25,000 acres in the state. Our lovely area is dotted with tons of NC Christmas Tree Fraser Fir Choose and Cut Farms.

Ashe County has the distinction of being the county with the most National Champion trees in the country. The distinction comes with the honor of a tree being taken to the nation’s capitol for display during the holiday season. Last year, the Christmas tree chosen for the White House came from an Alleghany County farm in nearby Laurel Springs NC.

It typically takes about seven years for a Fraser fir to grow 6-7 feet in height and farmers will visit each particular tree dozens of times throughout its life.

For more information about this year’s North Carolina Choose and Cut season, visit http://www.ashechamber.com or call the Ashe County Cooperative Extension at 336-219-2650.

To hep put you in the Christmas spirit, the Ashe Arts Center Gallery will host Tree Fest Nov. 20-Dec. 28 featuring beautifully decorated trees with handcrafted ornaments, holiday crafts and gift items. For more information about the exhibition, call the Arts Center at 336-846-ARTS.
