Ashe County Arts
Our region of the Western North Carolina Mountains has a long tradition of being a thriving arts and crafts community. The Appalachian culture and heritage in the area is preserved and maintained through artistic expressions and, furthermore, there are many art galleries, theatre companies and local craftsmen in Ashe County.

Those interested in the arts can check out the West Jefferson Arts District. Arts enthusiasts can walk down Main Street in downtown West Jefferson and notice the many wall murals and paintings on the buildings and browse through the galleries located in this area. Local artists sell various types of media, including paintings, sculpture and other types of unique crafts. There are also many other galleries and local art museums located outside of the downtown region of West Jefferson, so be sure to visit some of the other galleries located throughout Ashe County. Also, the Ashe Arts Center has an art gallery with changing exhibits featuring the works of many locals who paint as well as perform music, poetry and literature.

Another specific arts interest in the county is the popular and renowned NC Mountain attraction, the Ashe County Churches of the Frescoes. Both St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and the Holy Trinity Church are the sites of some beautiful fresco paintings. Located very close the Blue Ridge Parkway, these two churches feature paintings such as “Mystery of Faith”, “John the Baptist”, “Last Supper”, and “Mary, Great with Child”. Artist Ben Long spent a great deal of time and effort, and as a result both of the churches draw many visitors each year as people love to view these works of art.

Artwork and handcrafted unique items are not all that the region of Ashe County has to offer – bluegrass music has a close tie to the area and there are many performers and musicians in the area. Both the Todd General Store and the Mountain Music Jamboree feature great music and storytelling.
