Ashe County Hiking and Biking
Hiking and mountain biking are excellent ways for residents and visitors of Ashe County NC to get out and see the beautiful NC Blue Ridge Mountains. There are several great hiking and NC mountain biking trails in Ashe County. Some of the best trails are found
in the county’s state parks like New River State Park and Mount Jefferson State Park; others are found on the Blue Ridge Parkway which meanders through our lovely region of the Western North Carolina Mountains.
At the New River State Park, which is located in both Ashe County and Allegheny County, one can hike the Lump Trail, Farmhouse Loop Trail, Fern Nature Trail, Running Cedar Trail and the Hickory Trail. To get to the park, you can take the Wagoner Road access just off NC 88, 1.2 miles east of the intersection of NC 16 and NC 88. The other access to New River State Park in our region is
8 miles northeast of Jefferson, at river mile 15 off US 221.
The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway offers breathtaking views and a chance to see some areas that are not easily reached by car. You can start at the Lump Trail located at
milepost 264.4. This hike is an easy one. For a gorgeous view of a hidden vista, hike the Jumping off Rocks Trail at milepost 260.3. This easy trail is only about 1 mile and takes you through a gorgeous location in the forest. For those
who are looking to do a bit more strenuous hiking, hike the Summit Trail at Mount Jefferson State Park, which is an uphill hike to the highest peak in Ashe County NC, the top of Mount Jefferson.
Another special place in Ashe County is Bluff Mountain. This hiking and recreation area is maintained by the Nature Conservancy and anyone who wishes to hike or enjoy this area needs to first contact the Nature Conservancy
to arrange their trip.
For biking enthusiasts, Railroad Grade Road in Ashe County is always a favorite to bike. This two lane paved road is a wonderful road to bike as it has few inclines or turns and runs right along with the New River, offering some gorgeous sights of unspoiled
scenery. The road is typically chosen each year as the location for bike races and starting points for mountain biking guided trips. Glance over some of the listings below for more information on parks and local bike shops that specialize in hiking and mountain biking gear and information.
