The New River flows for more than 26 miles in Ashe County and is considered and American Heritage River throughout. The river's flow in Ashe County goes by the towns of Todd North Carolina, Fleetwood, Lansing and other areas, and creates mountain brooks and creeks that are filled with wild mountain trout. The river itself is calm and easily waded, making it a trout fishing paradise during most months in the year. The New River State Park, which is located all along the river in Ashe County and parts of Alleghany County, is one of the nation's top fishing destinations. Tubing, Canoeing & Biking

The New River's waters are calm and perfect for canoeing and lazy tubing. Every year in October, the sleepy little community of Todd, which lies right next to the banks of the New River NC, celebrates the ancient river by hosting the Todd New River Festival. Community members mix and mingle with vacationers and enjoy live entertainment, great food, and tons of Appalachian mountain crafts while honoring the beauty and history of the New River in North Carolina.
